I found my grandfather on the ellisisland.org site and obtained a copy of the manifest page. His last name was originally Batkalyn.

His last port in Russia was Riga

Does anyone know anything of the history of this name? I once found a site explaining that everyone with that last name phonetically came form one region in Russia.
