Marley was dead, to begin with . . .
When I came home from work yesterday my son came up to me and said, “Marley was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that,” and walked away. I asked him where he learned that, an...more

I Was Not That Kid
I was not the most serious undergraduate student. I was happy as an unfocused English major. I took an eclectic set of courses, wandered into most of my classes late, and never brought a notebook...more

Great Students
Many people ask me if I love working at UConn more than working as a high school English teacher, and I tell them truthfully that there are things I like a lot better, like a flexible work schedule...more

Veterans Day and War Literature
As Veterans Day approached, I found myself thinking about the many books we read in my American Literature course that deal with war and its consequences. Though Huck Finn does not deal directly w...more

A Wonderfully Unproductive Day

Gina BarrecaApr 4

Yee ha! Coming out in May from St. Martin's Press, my new book: It's Not That I'm Bitter... Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Visible Panty Lines and Conquered the World.

Publisher's Weekly:"Fans of Nora Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck will find humor along with serious insights about women and aging in Barreca's latest challenge to women to “stop obsessing over hymens, husbands, and hangnails and once again direct our attention outward to the larger issues of... the creation of genuinely significant opportunities for women in all workplaces.” But Barreca is more about laughs than lecturing, as she addresses the mysteries of finding the perfect bra, the indignities of bathing suit shopping at TJ Maxx...Between the snappy observations, Barreca takes an opportunity to liken the progression of contemporary feminist thought thought to a car accident—“it's not so much that we're in a backlash as we're in a whiplash.”

Thanks to everyone who has joined the new facebook feed for my blog. I'll have something new posted by this Friday. I had several ideas I've been batting around, and then we had a recent graduate from RHAM commit suicide, and now I feel compelled to write about him. We'll see.
