I taught french in a primary school from 1974-2002 in a school in Four Oaks, Sutton Colfield, West Midlands. When i first started teaching in an First school, french was taught twice a week(2x hr periods) to children from age7-12. We always went to france with the top 2 years- equivalent to y6 and 7.

Sadly with national Curriculum taking over, french was phased out of lower primary and from 1997 was only taught in Y5 and Y6.
After i left in 2002, French did not continue in the school.

I understand that over the past 6 years there have been moves to re-introduce french in Sutton Coldfield primary Schools- using peripetetic teachers. Spanish is also taught by Lisa stevens. Lisa will be abl eto share more about this, wont you, Lisa?!!
