| Description: | The reasons for a standardized Professional Services Maturity Model are pretty straightforward. The interesting thing is that in this day and age of community-based projects, one doesn’t exist, until now. Consider the value to your firm if one did exist. What if everyone assessed their professional services firm in a similar manner. Furthermore, what if the companies that had gone through this before us submitted “Protocol Packs” (best practices and lessons learned) that you could review that could be as valuable as a “smart bomb” with pinpointed problem accuracy and remediation tactics for your execution consideration? Wouldn’t that be more valuable than carpet bombing that destroys more than is necessary? If it this smart bomb had been available, how many years do you think it would have saved in your quest for continuous maturity improvement? As a real case study, it would have saved me the years I’ve been working to understand and improve maturity. The best way to say it is: I would be making a lot more money if this existed! I’ve been researching the topic of maturity models for years. If you’re like me, you think about improving your value to your clients and prospects daily. You are thinking about innovative ideas to leapfrog or maintain your competitive position. I can save you some time by giving you a short synopsis of my years of research. There is little of it out there that is available for free consumption. I’ve been unable to find that “one” source which provides truly pragmatic advice that I could easily digest and synthesize for my own practical execution consideration. Today, we have to *PAY* an expert to assess and provide recommendations for obtaining a higher level of maturity. I definitely respect the value of hiring an expert to obtain their opinion. But the question I have is: “What else could we be doing with the other 345 days of the year?”. What if there were “one source” where we could go to learn from others experiences? Certainly this would be a valuable complement to the paid expert’s assessment. Frankly it may even provide the detail on how to tactically execute the expert’s recommendations saving us precious and valuable time. In my 19 year career, I’ve worked for several professional services firms and have provided strategic consulting to countless others. I’ve made it one of my life’s passions to study the business models of each firm I’ve been associated with. I’ve been an apprentice to each of their business models to identify what makes them unique, valuable, and trusted by their clients. One thing for sure, every firm I’ve been around has a very different business model. That said, through my research there is a common and simple underlying framework that can be used to assess any professional services firm at a very detailed level. As in any scientific study, a common framework must be utilized to provide consistent and standardized method for performing assessments of the subject. The PSMM presented within this blog provides this simple yet powerful framework. The framework therefore, creates the foundation on which PSMM Protocol Packs (best practices and lessons learned) can and will begin to emerge. Once we have quality PSMM Protocol Packs submitted to the community, we will have created the “smart bomb” that allows for expeditious and continuous maturity growth. So, now you have the basis for why a Professional Services Maturity Model and how the value will be derived by this being a community project. I hope that you will join me in the PSMM Community Project. Contribute to help improve the framework. Submit Protocol Packs. Learn from others. Winners will contribute and use. Those who don’t will be left behind. Don’t forget to read and contribute to the “Real Life Stories we can all relate to” sub page that helps provide a broader context for why a Professional Services Maturity Model is so important to our industry. To yours and my future maturity growth - Mitch |
