No Dowry

The Blog for the Broke, Badass Bride

Information

Language:English
Tags:wedding, marriage, feminism
Description:I started No Dowry as a way to record the journey of planning a wedding without selling my soul or my firstborn in the process. Now that the wedding has passed, I'm going to continue to blog about being a (gasp) modern-day Navy wife, a feminist, a nomad and a lover of all things crafty. Not necessarily in that order.

Thanks, Amy! We had a great time. I'll be keeping up No Dowry as a look at this newfangled "marriage" thing.

Congrats on your wedding!

Good call, it's probably more about the having options...I still feel like a sell-out. I'd be happier if we BOTH changed our last names, or first names...or both names to express full unity, (and sound like a duo that does show tunes at off-the-strip clubs in Vegas: "Andy Andrews and his wife Andi Andrews will now sing the theme from 'the love boat'..."). The wedding's in July in Tiburon. I'll be back in Cali 12/24-12/31...are the infamous Dicker wimmin going to be around?

You know, I've thought about it a lot over the years, and I think for me, it just comes down to who has the better last name. That sounds completely vapid, but I have always hated my last name (junior high was rough) and have actually looked forward to getting rid of it.

Now that it's getting close, though, I'm kinda sad to give it up on some level. I don't feel like I'm being a bad feminist by giving up my last name-- isn't feminism all about being able to make choices for ourselves? And, although I get the meaning behind it, I HATE when "women" is spelled "womyn" or "wimmin." Spelling and grammar are important, people!

Kellie, when is your wedding? And are you ever coming back to California?

what are your thoughts on taking the male's last name? i thought i was pretty gung-ho about keeping my last name, but then it turns out i don't care. is that ant-femist? should i start spelling women "wimmin" to make up for it?

Sell your firstborn - you can always make another!

Aw, thanks :) I heart Praise Cheeses, so we're even. (Though whenever I read your blog, I am automatically hungry... what's up with that, huh?)
