Thoughts on Footwear

Nov 29, 2009
It’s important not to leave your martial arts at the dojo door. All too often the training floor and ‘real life’ serve as different worlds, never touching but allowing people to transition back and forth. The problem with such a separation is that...

Tegumi – Okinawan Grappling and Wrestling

Nov 21, 2009
Don’t believe me? It’s true I tell you! The Okinawans had both grappling and wrestling. They called it tegumi, and if you do karate you do it too (whether you know it or not). Imagine for a second a culture that, for as long as anyone can...

How is Your Kata Reading Going?

Nov 17, 2009
Over the weekend I had a chance to study with Bill Hayes Sensei, a senior student of Eizo Shimabukuro. Whenever I get an opportunity to train with Mr. Hayes I am amazed at just how much I have yet to learn. This weekend he shared a little anecdote...

I have some martial arts training in my background, and I've kept track of Ikigai for the past several months and I must say the content is regularly fresh and thought provoking. Too often anymore the martial arts are viewed as mere sport or self defense, but the Ikigai blog maintains the spirit of respect and harmony that real training inspires - a very thoughtful perspective. Two thumbs way up!

The material covered in this blog has a unique take on martial arts that is becoming more and more rare. It covers traditional martial arts extremely well and also gives a point of view of martial arts in pop culture. There is something for everyone with an interest in martial arts especially the traditional fighting styles.

What sets Ikigai apart from the other martial blogs out there is the variety of topics the writer covers. The author's curiosity runs deep with all things martial arts-related, and the author's approachable tone leaves no one in the dark.

It's about time that someone with this level of knowledge started writing about the martial arts! I only wish he updated it daily!

A top martial arts blog that isn't bogged down inside of MMA specifically.
